As Claude Debussy gazed out over the seat at Eastbourne, he was putting the finishing touches to his famous depiction of the ocean's power, playfulness and poetry. It was the magisterial and surging tone poem La Mer: a summoning of orchestral washes and fogs, and the peak of musical impressionism. Other delights from the pens of French composers join it here: Romanticism that's tidy and gratifying from Camille Saint-Saens, and, in contrast, impassioned and fervent from Georges Bizet.
